Anasuya Fair Opens at Chamoli’s Sacred Anasuya Dham With Traditional Rituals

A two-day traditional Anasuya Fair began at Anasuya Dham in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, with ceremonial rituals led by local leaders. Held on Dattatreya Jayanti, the event attracts devotees nationwide, including childless couples seeking blessings, while authorities ensure enhanced safety along pilgrimage routes.

Chamoli, Uttarakhand — The revered Anasuya Dham in Chamoli reverberated with devotional fervor on Wednesday as the region’s traditional two-day Anasuya Fair commenced with full religious ceremony. District Panchayat Chairperson Daulat Singh Bisht and Badrinath MLA Lakhpat Butola performed the inaugural rituals, formally opening the annual gathering that draws devotees from across India.

Held to mark Dattatreya Jayanti, the fair is one of Chamoli’s most deeply rooted cultural observances. As part of long-standing custom, processional palanquins carrying local deities arrived at the temple complex throughout the day, adding a vibrant, ceremonial dimension to the event. Childless couples from across the country visit Anasuya Dham during this occasion, seeking blessings for progeny and the fulfillment of personal vows, a belief tied closely to the site’s spiritual heritage.

Authorities have deployed additional personnel along the pedestrian route to the shrine and instituted special safety measures to manage the flow of pilgrims, given the anticipated rise in footfall over the two-day celebration.

The fair’s origins rest in a powerful legend: it is believed that at this very spot, Anasuya—revered as a symbol of devotion and purity—used her spiritual prowess to transform the Hindu trinity into infant form, an act that is said to have led to the birth of Lord Dattatreya. This mythological association lends the festival both its sanctity and its enduring cultural resonance.
